JULY’S REGAL RUBY
Explore Meaning & Symbolism, Discover Cuts & Colors
The ruby, drenched by nature in a vivid range of reds has been seen by many throughout the millennia as the most powerful of the precious gemstones. For others, it takes a prominent but equal place in the leading quartet of the world’s most coveted jewels alongside diamond, emerald, and sapphire. Associated with many astral signs by the ancients, the ruby is also mentioned in many revered texts, including the Bible. Owning a ruby is thought to grant contentment and peace, bestowing upon the wearer protection against misfortune and ill health, and it was often placed under a sleeper’s pillow to ward off bad dreams.
Ruby’s vivid color, which can range from bright pink to the most dramatic intense red gives it a dramatic appeal that makes it a natural symbol of blazing passions, perfect as the birthstone for the hot summer month of July. A ruby was at one point thought to be so powerful that it could make water boil. The stone should be worn on the left hand to intensify this power, while the giving of a ruby denotes friendship and even love. Its strong association with vitality has also made it a favorite of royalty the world over.
Ruby’s hardness is second only to the diamond, scoring a full 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. The ruby is a variety of corundum, making it in the same geological family as a sapphire, so if the color is too pink, the stone is classified as a pink sapphire. Similarly, if it is too blue, it is a violet sapphire. The most coveted rubies have traditionally been found in the Myanmar (Burma) valley of Mogok and possess the most exquisite red color known as pigeon blood, so called as it matches the intense red of the first drop of the bird’s vital fluid.
