Who can ever forget marveling at brilliant white light magically refracted into rainbow hues by water droplets in the sky, iridescent oil slicks on rain puddles, or school science lab prisms? Many may recall how we learned the order of the color spectrum back in school, yet the modern color wheel has now exploded into many more subtle primary hues, each capable of expressing a person’s mood or inspiring a designer’s creative fancy. Color is the lingua franca of emotion and we use it to express polar opposites: red for excitement or rage, green for growth or envy, yellow for happiness or cowardice and blue for serenity or sadness. These concepts are as basic to us as the air we breathe and the colors we chose to live with are often a statement of our most intimate selves.
Gemstones are nature’s way of capturing the array of rainbow colors contained in white light, and Swarovski has dedicated its technological expertise to refining and enhancing the colors of genuine gemstones and created stones. The breakthrough innovation, Thermal Color Fusion (TCF™) for Swarovski Zirconia and Swarovski Genuine Topaz has come a long way towards achieving just that. Patented in Austria and the United States, Swarovski‘s TCF™ technology enhances the stone’s surface with a permanent, hard-ceramic layer, which is resistant to production and cleaning methods. Coloration is restricted to the near surface of the stone and does not modify the body of the gemstone in any way. Importantly, unlike standard procedures, it does not use any irradiation so it is environmentally and consumer friendly. Swarovski uses TCF™ to color genuine topaz and zirconia, both of which usually come in white.
TCF™ has allowed the creation of eleven dramatic colors for topaz all of which are usually not otherwise available. Swarovski Genuine Topaz remains a genuine stone; TCF™ simply enhances what nature has created in order to offer a myriad of new design possibilities to expand designers’ artistic freedom. Each shade is strictly controlled so that it is consistent no matter how large the quantity of the order or size of the stone. This eliminates expensive color sorting and is especially advantageous for pave setting techniques where stones need to appear exactly alike. Swarovski Zirconia comes in a range of twelve TCF™ tones, each with brilliance significantly higher than that of zirconia colored by other methods. Each one is also closely aligned to those of natural colored gemstones, offering designers and consumers a great alternative.
The technique also allows Swarovski to come up with new hues that reflect the latest fashion trends.
